Simple self-care habits for kids

Building healthy, sustainable routines that nourish and nurture, name feelings and help children care for their physical and mental health helps build resilience. Drawing pictures to express feelings and letting kids providing visual cues to let you know what they need or how they are feeling often helps too.

Acknowledge struggles
In the middle of our grown-up world, it’s easy to forget that children absorb adult tensions and have worries and challenges of their own.

The power of nature
Take a walk. Observe new things. Open a window for fresh air. Go to the park. A change of scenery with some “green” is a difference maker.

Deep breath reset
Stepping aside and taking belly breaths – breath in the smell of pretend baking and then breath out like blowing out birthday candles – is a helpful self-regulation strategy.

Staying hydrated
Nothing beats a refreshing glass of water and a quiet break for calming big emotions. Teach kids to fill and carry their own water bottles. Healthy snacks help too.

Empowering is key
As children are able, encourage and show them how to care for their bodies – skin, hair, teeth, feet etc- to build skills and confidence.

Proactive talks
Use positive affirmations and share what’s suitable In difficult times. We often try to protect children by keeping quiet or leaving it until the last minute. Transitions will be easier if we find ways to anticipate feelings and provide truthful explanations.

Wiggle it out
Sometimes a silly moment or a humorous dance is all that’s needed for a little boost or a timely distraction from troubles.
