For the love of gardening

From patience, watchfulness industriousness and joy to independence, sensory development, healthy eating and family togetherness, simple garden projects with a child reap bountiful rewards. Gardening is also fertile ground for children with hands on opportunities to safely experience the magic of nature and develop a deeper understanding of plant life, ecology and the environment. There are just a few:

Physical activity: Bending, carrying, digging, raking. Light gardening or yard work can burn up to approximately 330 calories an hour and strengthen muscles. Research has also shown a link between gardening and lower blood pressure. (ideal for parents and grandparents perhaps)

STEM learning: There are countless ways that gardening allows kids to apply scientific principles, research and experimentation. From planting pollinator gardens to discussing sustainability and the impact of chemicals and man’s environmental impact, there’s lots to learn in the garden.

Responsibility: The need to caring for and watering, weeding and garden maintenance teaches both organizational and time management skills.

Creativity and pride: Making a plan and layout for a garden , choosing what to plant allows kids to express themselves. When things grow making flower bouquets or meals from produce, gives children both a sense of accomplishment.

Environmental and climate stewardship: Learning about conservation, the natural world of plants, the relationship between animals, insects and plants and, the importance of protecting our natural resources and understanding how they can participate can be life-changing.

Well-being and connection: Aside from the health benefits of eating the fruits of their labour, tending a garden has been shown to instill calmness, mindfulness and emotional resilience.

Family time: Gardening together can be a simple activity that doesn’t have to cost a lot. It can be done on a small scale on a balcony, a small piece of land or even pots.
