How to support a healthy body image

It all starts in the mind, not in the mirror. A child’s body image and level of self-esteem are tied together—and can affect their feelings, thoughts, and behaviour. It’s time to recognize and challenge stereotypes.

If you don’t feel good about your body, it’s hard to feel good about yourself. And, if you don’t value yourself, it’s hard to notice the good things and give your body the respect it deserves.

• Encourage well-balanced meals and exercise. Explain that eating well will make you feel healthy, energetic and stronger.

• Discourage judgement of themselves and others based on weight, shape, or size.

• Try to surround your child with positive friends and family who recognize their uniqueness and like them just the way they are.

• Be aware of how you, as parents or caregivers talk about your body with family and friends.

• Write a list of the positive benefits of the body part or feature you don’t like or struggle to accept.

• Be mindful of messages your kids hear and see in the media and how those messages inform the way they will feel about the way they look.
